Glucotrol or Generic Glipizide Uses, Dosage & Side effects

Glucotrol contains an anti-diabetic medicine named Glipizide, which helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels. This drug is prescribed for the management of signs and symptoms of type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes (in most of the cases) is caused by poor diet and lack of physical activity resulting in the body's resistance to normal levels of circulating insulin (a hormone secreted by the pancreas, that allows your body to use sugar from carbohydrates in the food that you eat for energy or to store glucose for future use).

What is Glucotrol (Glipizide) Used for?

Glipizide is a sulfonylurea antidiabetic agent, prescribed for type 2 diabetes (a condition in which the body does not use insulin normally and therefore cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood), particularly in people whose diabetes cannot be controlled by diet alone. It increases the amount of insulin secretion and thus regulates the sugar level in the blood.

Glipizide Dosage:

In adults, the recommended dose of this drug is 5 mg once daily before breakfast (maximum daily dose of 20 mg).

Incase of Overdose

The overdose of this drug can have dangerous adverse effects like lactic acidosis (a serious life-threatening issue in which there occurs an excessive accumulation of lactic acid in the body). The symptoms include cold feeling, slow heart rate, difficulty breathing, weakness, muscle pain, and fatigue.

Management: The use of hemodialysis has shown remarkable results in this drug’s overdose.

In case of missed dose:

Take the missed dose the moment you remember to take it. On the other hand, if it is roughly the time for the next dose, leave out taking the missed dose and carry on with your regular dosing plan. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

What are the possible side effects of this drug?

The common side effects of this drug include hypoglycemia (low blood glucose level), blurred vision, nausea, feeling of discomfort, and loss of appetite, diarrhea, abdominal pain, heartburn, abnormal blood counts, vomiting, sleepiness, yellowish skin, and eye.
