Drug Information: Anafranil is the brand name for Clomipramine. It is an antidepressant used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It comes in the form of a sugar-coated tablet.

Why is Anafranil prescribed?

Anafranil belongs to the group of medications known as tricyclic antidepressants. It is used to treat major depressive disorders and to reduce the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder like recurrent thoughts and the urge to do repetitive tasks such as re-checking the closed door or washing hands repetitively. After 2-3 weeks the person taking this medication starts feeling relaxed, happy and develops the ability to focus, and experience reduced restlessness. It also helps to treat muscle weakness in people with a sleep disorder.

How to use Anafranil?

Follow the directions for this medicine as given by the doctor. This medicine usually starts with a low dose and it increases as required. Do not exceed or reduce the dose and duration without consulting your doctor. The dosage is based on the age, response to the treatment as well as the medical condition.

Anafranil should be administered with food or milk to avoid stomach upset. Do not chew, crush or dissolve the medicine.

What if I miss the dose of Anafranil?

If you miss the dose try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is already time for your next dose then do not take two doses at the same time instead skip the missed one and continue as per the set schedule. Precautions:
