Synthivan

Synthivan (Atazanavir/Ritonavir): Medical Information

Therapeutic Class: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
Active Ingredients: The active ingredients present in Synthivan are Atazanavir and Ritonavir.
DrugInformation: Synthivan is a blend of atazanavir and ritonavir. Both the drugs belong to a class of protease inhibitors and used in the treatment of HIV infection. This medication is not a cure for HIV; it works by restricting its virus from multiplying.

Why is Synthivan prescribed?

Synthivan comprises of atazanavir (300 mg) and ritonavir (100 mg) in a fixed amount. Though both these compounds have different functionality but when combining together they help effectively in controlling HIV infection. Atazanavir hinders the virus-specific processing of polyproteins in HIV infected cells and decreases the risk of spreading HIV. Ritonavir, on the other hand, enhances the levels of protease inhibitors and allows the medication to work better in HIV therapy.

How to use Synthivan?

It is always recommended to follow the doctor’s instructions carefully before taking Synthivan tablets. This medication is available in different strengths of each active ingredient. Depending on the patient’s condition, weight, response to treatment and other medications, the doctor decides case-specific prescription.

This medication needs to be taken with food. For effective results, take it at the same time every day. Try not to skip any doses. Do not give less or more of this medicine without asking your doctor. Doing so may lead to increased infection and side effects.

What if I miss the dose of Synthivan?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember and resume your regular dose schedule. But, if you remember your missed dose when it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take an extra dose or in fewer intervals to make up for a missed dose. Rather set an alarm so you are always aware when to take medicine.
