What is Eskalith (esk-AHL-ith) used for?

Eskalith is indicated for the treatment of manic depressive disorder (bipolar disorder). This medication acts in stabilizing the aggressive behaviour and mood, by restoring the natural balance of neurotransmitters effect in the brain.

Recommended dosage and administration

Based on your medical condition and lithium blood levels, the recommended dosage 900 mg daily, e.g., ESKALITH (lithium carbonate) CR 450 mg twice daily for patients on maintenance therapy.
For example, a total daily dose of 1,350 mg, generally 450 mg of ESKALITH (lithium carbonate) CR should be given in the morning and 900 mg of ESKALITH (lithium carbonate) CR in the evening. If desired, the total daily dose of 1,350 mg can be given in 3 equal 450-mg doses of ESKALITH (lithium carbonate) CR.
Immediate-release capsules are usually given thrice or four times daily. Doses of controlled-release tablets are usually given twice daily with (approximately 12-hour intervals).

Side effects of the Eskalith

Please get immediate medical help if you notice any of the below side effects, which include some of the milder side effects like:

  • Tiredness
  • Weight gain
  • Mildly shaky hands
  • Drowsiness
  • Increase in urinating frequency
  • Dizziness
  • Frequent thirst
Some of the more serious side effects include:
  • Confusion
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vision changes (blurring, vision loss)
  • Vomiting
  • Muscle weakness
  • Joint pain/swelling
  • Severe trembling hands
  • Unsteady walk
  • Cold hands or feet
  • Pain/discoloration of fingers or toes

Get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms from a serious allergic reaction, including: breathing difficulty, severe dizziness, swollen lymph nodes, rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat).

Precautions to be taken

Prior to consumption of lithium, inform the treating doctor of any allergic reactions, you may have. Especially if you have a medical history of kidney disease, heart disease, skin disorder (such as psoriasis), urinary problems (such as difficulty urinating), seizures, Parkinson’s disease, underactive thyroid function (hypothyroidism), leukaemia, severe dehydration (severe loss of body water), or any other infection with high fever.
Avoid breastfeeding while using lithium, because lithium is known to pass into breast milk and may cause undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Lithium, can harm a pregnant woman and her unborn baby due to untreated mental/mood problems (such as bipolar disorder). It is advised that this drug be refrained from using during pregnancy or for any woman planning on pregnancy.

Drug Interactions

Refrain from changing or stopping the recommended dosage of any medicines without your doctor's approval. Medications that may interact with this drug include NSAIDs (such as celecoxib, ibuprofen), ACE inhibitors (such as captopril, enalapril), ARBs (such as losartan, valsartan), "water pills" (diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide, furosemide), other drugs for mental/mood conditions (such as chlorpromazine, haloperidol, thiothixene) among others.
