  • Why is Viread medication prescribed?

In combination of other medicines, Viread (Tenofovir) is used to treat HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). Although, it may not cure HIV, it helps by decreasing the patient’s chance of developing AIDS and other HIV-related illnesses. It is also used in treated chronic HBV in adults and children 12 years of age and older.

  • How should Viread medicine be used?

This medicine is available in tablet as well as powder form to be taken by mouth. It is taken once a day with or without food. The oral power must not be mixed with liquid; it must be added to 2 to 4 ounces of soft food.

  • What should I do if I forget a dose?

Do not overdose by taking the missed dose along with your regular dose. If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember, however, if it is time for your regular dose, skip the missed dose.

  • What side effects can Viread cause?

Taking Viread may have side effects such as depression, itching, fever, weight loss, diarrhoea, and headache, difficulty falling asleep, decreased urination, pain in the arms, hands, feet or legs or worsening bone pain.

  • Precautions:
  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any medication or if you plan to start taking any medicine or supplement.
  • Inform your doctor if you have or have ever had a liver disease, HIV, osteoporosis, kidney disease or bone fractures.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to get pregnant, it is important to discuss with the doctor first.
